Second Intergovernmental conference 'Biodiversity in Europe'

24-28 February 2002, Budapest, Hungary

The Second Intergovernmental Conference 'Biodiversity in Europe' was held on 24-28 February 2002 in Budapest, Hungary. The Conference is regarded as a European regional preparatory meeting for the CBD/COP-6. Participants included delegations from governments from the UNECE region, representatives of international governmental organisations, and observers, which include participants from international and national expert and NGO organisations. The Conference brought together in a unified approach the key actors involved in European biodiversity policy, focusing on the Pan-European Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy and its Council, the EU Member States working group on biodiversity, and the focal points to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Conference discussed five issues of European importance to the CBD and brought a concerted message to the sixth CBD Conference of the Parties in April 2002, The Netherlands.

Apart from Plenary sessions, devoted to the CBD/COP-6 preparations and a regular PEBLDS Council agenda, the Conference offered a venue for meetings of the Committee on Activities of the Council of Europe in the Field of Biological and Landscape Diversity (CO-DBP), the Sofia Biodiversity Initiative and sub-regional groups.

Conference was convened under the overall umbrella of PEBLDS with a Secretariat provided by the Joint Secretariat of PEBLDS together with the Government of Hungary.

The outcome of the conference is laid down in the Chairman's conclusions, which was communicated to the appropriate sections of COP6 in The Hague.

The subjects of the discussions papers include:
